This poem about dogs is an excerpt from my book, “Wild Writers: The Animal World’s Greatest Poets”.

Pug, Great Dane, Labrador, Dachshund,
Greyhound, Terrier, Shih Tzu, Doberman,
Pincher, Saluki, Weimaraner, Saint Bernard.
Shepherd, Poodle, Chihuahua, Mutt.

I am your dog,
A puppy of any and every breed.
Big, tiny, short, or tall,
I am the most loyal of them all,
Trustier than your favorite steed.

There is no greater friendship than dog and Man,
Complementary personalities that match every plan.
We are Love in its second-highest form,
For only God loves your species more.
Call us your furry little sons and brothers and garbage cans.

I love following you around,
For it makes both of us so, so happy.
It does not matter if I lick your face.
You make my warm and fuzzy feelings feel commonplace.
Now, I am getting too sappy.

We are bound
As master and hound.
I was the first huskie
To come to you; I found
That you needed a buddy,
A wild wolf who needed one, too.

We conquered the world together,
You and I,
Because we rescued each other
When we struck that special bond.
To Eternity and back I will be with you,

Man, as the cutest child in your family,
As the one who unconditionally
Comes to you without question,
Your appreciative little canine
Who will always vote for you
In every single Presidential Election.

I love you for who you truly are.
Nothing beats you in my heart.
We are each other’s mutual spark.
With all the deposits I leave for you in the parks,
I support you and do my part.

You are my best friend.
I will defend you to the bitter end.
Because we make a good pair,
I will always be there!
